How to find duplicate files on iPhone

· 3 min read

Short answer

On iOS 16 and later, Photos → Albums → Duplicates merges duplicate photos. For files stored elsewhere, such as documents, videos and downloads in MaxVault, open the Duplicates folder, review each match, and delete the copies you don't need.

Duplicate photos in the Photos app

On iOS 16 and later, open Photos → Albums, scroll to Utilities, and tap Duplicates. Tap Merge to keep the best copy.

Duplicate files in MaxVault

Files you keep in your vault, including documents, videos and downloads, are not in the Photos library, so Photos can't check them. MaxVault 8 can:

  1. Open MaxVault and go to the Duplicates folder.
  2. MaxVault lists files that match each other.
  3. Review each group and choose which copies to delete.

MaxVault never deletes anything on its own. You decide which copy to keep.

Keep it from happening again

Duplicates usually come from importing the same photos twice. Turn on Delete after Import in MaxVault's Photos settings, so imported photos leave your library and can't be imported again by mistake.
