How to remove location from photos on iPhone

· 4 min read

Short answer

iPhone photos store their location unless you turn it off. To remove it from one photo, open the share sheet in Photos, tap Options, and turn off Location before sending. To strip location and other metadata from photos you keep privately, use Remove metadata in MaxVault's editor.

Check whether a photo has a location

Open the photo in Photos and swipe up. If you see a map, the photo has a location attached.

Option 1: Turn off location when sharing

  1. In Photos, select the photo and tap Share.
  2. Tap Options at the top of the share sheet.
  3. Turn off Location, then tap Done and share.

This only affects that one share. The original photo keeps its location.

Option 2: Remove metadata in MaxVault

For photos kept in your vault, remove the location from the photo itself:

  1. Open the photo in MaxVault and tap Edit.
  2. Open Metadata, review what the photo contains (such as its location), and choose Remove metadata. Then save.

Now every future share of that photo is location-free, and you can also blur faces in the same editor.

Stop saving location on new photos

Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Camera and choose Never.

Keep what’s personal private.
